CULTURE OF CONVERSION - THE OUTDOOR SPACE

04.05.2023

Description

New balconies built in a respectful way of dealing with the existing, expand and improve the living possibilities.

Over the centuries, balconies have fulfilled many functions: they served as warehouses for food, as extended economic space, as representational platforms, and as architectural ornaments. Especially around the turn of the century, many upper-middle-class apartment houses were built with small balconies. The residential complex at Carl-Wurmb-Weg in Spittal did not have balconies.

The newly built balconies are designed as detached outdoor spaces. The joint to the existing building expresses the respect for the built environment. Conceived as independent towers that dock to the existing building only selectively in the area of the terrace doors, a new time and architectural level is deliberately introduced.

The vertical slats respond to the surroundings. Turned parallel to the view to the south, they provide maximum views, turned by 45° they provide visibility protection between the neighbors.
