KABINENTRAKT SÜD, STRANDBAD KLAGENFURT
03.07.2026
Description
Client: Stadtwerke Klagenfurt AG, Completed 2016–2017, Scope of work: Phases 1–9
The Strandbad has been arguably the most important leisure facility for the people of Klagenfurt since 1927. The newly constructed South Changing Room Block has provided it with a contemporary extension. Eleven two-storey structures, arranged like ribs along the road, accommodate 455 changing rooms and 524 lockers. The courtyards in between offer shaded seating areas. The larch timber cladding on the façades, as well as the cross-laminated timber used for the changing rooms and locker doors, provide a contrast to the traditional white bathhouses.
The street-facing boundary of the new structures is structured by a rhythmic façade of wooden slats and concrete, and is therefore no longer opaque, unlike the solidly built complex in front of it. The vertical wooden slats create a visual connection between the street and the lake.
