THE RETURN OF LIGHT

19.12.2025

Description

Our architecture arises significantly from the questioning and comprehension of the task, from the intensive occupation with the site and from the exploratory examination of the past and the future.

With this in mind, we would like to take a look at the origins of today's Christmas celebrations as the year draws to a close.

Its roots lie in the pre-Christian Yule festival, a festival of light celebrating the return of light. In the Christian interpretation, the Christ Child appears as the ‘light of the world’ who, as seen in numerous historical depictions, illuminates the darkness and symbolises a new beginning when the days grow longer again.

Originally celebrated on the winter solstice on 21 December, the festival was later moved to 24 December. This day was dedicated to the memory of Adam and Eve, thus linking the story of the first humans with the birth of Jesus, who as the ‘new Adam’ embodies the redemption of humanity.
