Socio-educational center in Klagenfurt: Recognition with the architects‘ office Roth

Description

The building at Gutenbergstraße 9, which dates from the Wilhelminian period, is located to the west and directly adjacent to the grounds of Klagenfurt Hospital. The old building, which is in good condition, is located in a prime inner-city location. The building is surrounded by an approximately 2. 5 hectare park-like green space. The embedding in this green space and the location of the property, away from main traffic arteries, make the building and property a green, quiet „island“ in the middle of the city.

The L-shaped structure with its jumps in height, projections and recesses is framed by the uniform coloring and stucco design to form a large, cohesive volume.

Based on the analysis of the existing structure, the qualities were to be worked out and the deficits eliminated through clear and reduced interventions. The dignified treatment of the existing, the uncovering and creation of a spatial structure that does justice to the task, were design guiding principles.

The new main entrance was built in the area of the eastern wing of the building and the risalit located here. A generously roofed vestibule, which is oriented to the structure of the building, creates a new and clearly recognizable main access here in combination with a ramp-stairway construction.

Excavations and atriums in the southern and eastern areas bring daylight into the basement and link indoor and outdoor areas.

Other items considered in the submission: exterior and interior circulation, café/bistro - central administration, education area, daycare, daycare groups, kindergarten groups, and SPC community housing.
